It has been brought to our attention that several of our residents have been contacted by people identifying themselves as employees of the City, and have been asked to donate money for what the caller claims is a charitable cause. Unfortunately, these calls are being made by scammers, and are spoofing (or masking) their phone number to make it appear as though the call is coming from the City or our Police and Fire Departments to make their ruse seem even more convincing.
PLEASE REMEMBER THAT NO REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CITY OF BERWYN, THE BERWYN FIRE DEPARTMENT, OR THE BERWYN POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL EVER CONTACT YOU BY PHONE IN AN ATTEMPT TO SOLICIT MONEY.
While there are many wonderful charities that would put your donations to good use this holiday, do your research to make sure you are not falling victim to a scam. If you are interested a certain charity, ask the caller for their website and verify that they are legitimate. Don’t let anyone rush you into making any type of donation, and if you come across any other red flags or something just doesn’t seem right, consider making your donation elsewhere. Scams calls can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online at FTC.gov/complaint – and if you have become the victim of this scam and gave money to the caller, please contact the Berwyn Police Department at 708-795-5600 to file an incident report.
Thank you for your time, and on behalf of Mayor Lovero and the entire City of Berwyn, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.
